Opening or Expanding your Business

All businesses are required to be licensed and to pay a tax. A valid state license or sales permit is a prerequisite. New licenses are subject to approval of other city departments (including Current Planning, Codes & Inspection, and Health & Human Services). The basis for computation of the tax (gross receipts, gross payroll, value added) depends on the type of business (retail, wholesale, service manufacturing, nonprofit).

Licensed businesses are entitled to annual decals allowing use of loading zones (yellow curb) for up to 15 minutes, within Berkeley city limits. There are also limited commercial parking permits in certain areas of the city.

Visit the License and Collections Division (Finance Department) at 1947 Center Street; call 981-7200 for more information.

The Berkeley Chamber of Commerce has a booklet to help you start your business. Call the Chamber office or stop by for a copy of "Starting a Business in Berkeley: A Resource Guide for New Businesses."
